Military medical training that combines medicine and military practice

Can you become a doctor in the Armed Forces while also working within a structured military healthcare service? The military medical training programme is an integrated education pathway for physicians interested in combining civilian medical expertise with military service.

The programme is conducted in connection with the Center for Health and Medical Training in Åbyhøj and is aimed at participants from all over Denmark. It is designed for doctors seeking employment as reserve medical officers and who want a military medical education with a clear link between theory, practice, and operational settings.

The programme is part of the overall education within the Danish Defence and uses simulation training to practice medical decision-making in a military context.

Military medical disciplines and modules

As part of the military medical training programme, a number of specialised modules are included, covering key military medical disciplines. These include field medical service, PHTLS, ATLS, physiological examination, and emergency military medicine. In addition, surgical military medicine, aviation medicine, and naval medicine are included.

The structure of the programme makes it possible to work systematically with medical procedures in military settings based on the modules listed in the course outline.

The path to becoming a doctor in the Armed Forces

The military medical training programme is embedded in the medical structure of the Danish Defence and is conducted as a time-limited employment programme. It combines basic military training with military medical and clinical modules that support the role of a physician in the Armed Forces.

The programme includes, among other things, basic military training, a foundational military medical module, as well as instruction in pedagogy, communication, and leadership. It also covers basic tactical command and introduces the participant to the Danish Army, Royal Danish Navy, and Royal Danish Air Force, ensuring that the doctor’s role is placed within a broader military context.

The programme consists of modules and activities as outlined in the military medical training overview.

Military Medical Training 2026

The application deadline has passed. Applications are now being reviewed, and some applicants will be selected for the next stage of the process.

The selection process is conducted in two stages. The first selection takes place at Holmen, Copenhagen on 8–9 April 2026. The second selection is held at Infirmeri Syd, Skrydstrup on 13–15 April 2026. Applicants attend one full day at each location if they progress in the process.

In the application, candidates may indicate preferred dates, which will be accommodated as far as possible. Participation requires availability for the entire day.

It is expected that the military medical training programme will be offered again with a start in the first half of 2027. A possible intake in the second half of 2027 has not yet been decided.
